Distinctive Unit Insignia

Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a rounded shield blazoned:  Or, a fess checky Azure and of the first, a bend engrailed within a double tressure Gules.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Red scroll turned Gold inscribed FOUR FOR ONE in Gold letters.

Symbolism
Scarlet is the color of the Coast Artillery.  The design is based upon the activation of the organization at Camp Stewart, Georgia, the shield being similar to that of the Stewart Clan of Scotland.  The checkered horizontal fess is the heraldic representation of the military belt or girdle of honor; the diagonal bend denotes the scarf of a military commander; the engrailed line represents fire and speed, all being enclosed within a double tressure indicating the protection afforded the Battalion as the tressure heraldically represents the moat dug around medieval castles.  The motto is an expressive motto, being the numerical designation of the organization (441) and having a similar implication of the well known All for one, one for all.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 441st Separate Coast Artillery Battalion (Antiaircraft) on 11 February 1943.  It was redesignated for the 441st Antiaircraft Artillery Missile Battalion on 19 December 1955.
